Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai

There's something kind of beautiful about Forrest Whitaker. I just watched him in Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (remembered recommendation from Matt Kaplan, a.k.a. philly420pdx, a.k.a. The Other Matt Meat (actually, I just made that up)). He plays Ghost Dog: good with kids, good with animals, kills people. OK, I'm down with the first and second qualities. Ghost Dog's a hit man. And you want to hug him. Or just hang out with him and his pigeons, talking about good books or just being around each other.

It's a poetic, quiet film that I'm glad I saw; there's a good vibe to it. (I first wrote "energy," but that makes it sound like a more energetic film than it is. It wouldn't work at a faster pace.) I grooved to the music The RZA made for it; the notes in the flier inside the DVD case mention how his music echoes both the flight of Ghost Dog's pigeons and how Ghost Dog walks. That makes sense. I did want something a little less death-y after it, though, so I put on Norah Jones. Not even her country songs have death in them, at least not on her first album...

Oh, and sidenote: I'm enjoying the fantasy novel Eragon, which Alicia let me borrow. I want a pet dragon!
