Probably buy outside Swindon in one of the nice towns near by. I find Swindon itself a bit too awful - lots of strip malls and endless new build estates.

The author seems to be doing his best to string things out... the cynic in me suggests that he has his eye on his bank balance (though I get them from the library/charity shop so I'm happy).
I was working my way through the Wheel of Time and got to about book 5 or 6 before I stopped. I've heard rumours that he's winding it up now, but I'm not sure I believe them.
My recommendations would be to try George RR Martin (although he's also heading towards a bit of a long series...), Charles Stross, Julian May or Robin Hobb (who actually seems capable of finishing a series) instead.
