Thou who was terrifying in both strength and countenance, for thy Creator's sake thou didst surrender thyself willingly to them that sough thee; for thou didst persuade both them and the women that sought to arouse in thee the fire of lust, and they followed thee in the path of martyrdom; and in torments thou didst prove courageous; wherefore have ( Read more... )

I most often hear St. Ignatius referred to as "the God-bearer of Antioch" in reference to his sanctity. However, there is also a tradition that identifies him with the little child whom Christ called to Himself and blessed, and therefore was also borne by God. That detail actually made it into an episode of The X-Files.

Since Christopher in Greek is Χριστοφορος, I think Θεοφορος would be "God-bearer" rather'n the other way around.

(sulfababy objected to the use of "bearer" here; to her that's the word translated as "τοκος"--though "τοκος" is apparently not a word in modern use at all, so I think we can just file this away with the acknowledgement that "Θεοφορος" and "Θεοτοκος" are vastly different concepts...)

...Hope you had a blessed name-day, sir.

Peace,

--me

Next time 'round comes on July 25, when the Western traditional calendar gives mention to Christopher... twice the days, twice the celebration! Pax!
