On the more optimistic side, I think these archaic socially-conservative ideals are slowly dying out along with the bitter old bastards that have them. Our nation will be divided on fiscal issues until the end of time, but there will come a day where homophobic policy will seem as bizarre, ridiculous and ancient as having black people as slaves seems to us now.
