Question... *and yes, I am an idiot who is terminally confused* .... what is the difference between Tumblr (new thing to me) and facebook, twitter, and LJ/wordpress.... Am v. confused and debating signing up for one but can't see what the difference is?

Tumblr can be used to blog just like LJ and Wordpress (although with less features), but its main strength is in simple, one-click reblogging of other people's posts. It's the ideal place to amass a collection of "inspirational" pictures from other Tumblrs you follow. It's not quite so well suited to traditional blogging, but some people like to use it that way. Mine's just full of pictures...

Tumblr is well suited to pictures. It's very POORLY suited to having conversations -- you can "like" or reblog something, you can't leave comments!

yeah, I got one, but mostly because a certain young, up-and-coming, and RIDICULOUSLY HOT musician I know decided to start one.

Hi hun!

Well according to my teenager Tumblr is the new black... rofl!

It's INCREDIBLY easy to post stuff to Tumblr... I have one but it auto updates from my blog... http://rjscott.tumblr.com/...

It is all about covering all the bases for all the different things people use to socialise...

Twitter is microblogging. 140 characters. It also goes directly to people's phones etc if they use Twitter on their phone. It's like having a large but short-lived megaphone composed of cryptic 140-character tweets. I have tried it twice and deleted my account twice, and I have decided I won't be bothering any more.

Tumblr has no post limit--you can microblog, you can put up LONG posts, etc. It's REALLY good for sharing media, though--videos, photos, etc. They make it extremely easy to reblog anything you find. A lot of Tumblr blogs are of the "cool things I found on the net" variety. There are people like me who use it as a sort of Facebook updater, though. feb4_tumblr is my Tumblr RSS feed ( ... )
