one my of super smart teachers was telling me how funny it was when she'd be getting on a bus with her friend, talking loudly and comfortably, then suddenly say "May I have a transfer, please?" in a nice, polite voice to the bus driver.

we all asked her if she thought that was okay, and she said that she thinks it's important to address the different relationships you have with people: to indicate closeness or history or status. only politicians don't do that (being very diplomatic, and very impersonal).

but keep in mind that even though you change your approach for different people, we're all attracted to that Real You, whatever that might be. that's why we love you: the way you change really just makes it easy for us to see that Real You.
