Blue jays being part of the corvid family, are so smart. :)
As for you squirrels, all you really did was give them a new toy.
I just gave up and feed everybody.

i wish i was half so smart as those blue jays, too. instead i feel more like the squirrel: dump me off five, six times, i'll still come back as long as there's peanut butter in the mix.

i'm halfway to your strategy; i'll feed em, but i make it more difficult for them to eat EVERYTHING IN THE YARD in under ten minutes. ;)

they don't come around much, since i adjusted our squirrel-proof feeder to disallow their weight on the perches...

My bluejay family abandoned the back yard for the front; no clue why, except maybe Spud was hanging around the feeder. ;-)
I did have a hawk fly right over my head this morning at work. :)

our resident Cooper's hawk came back again a couple days ago, while mom and i were looking out the window. suddenly there was this dark brown FLASH in front of the window, and then a bunch of sparrows scattered, and when we looked out, he was sitting in the honeysuckle looking his usual miffed self. he flew to the bench and sat is his usual spot for a bit. then he suddenly hopped to the ground and disappeared underneath the honeysuckle, and - we think - maybe under the edge of the house. which... is just weird, right? i mean we watched and didn't see him fly out, so we don't know where else he could have gone, and it was hours before the little birds came back, so we started to wonder if hawks ever gave up being ambush-from-above predators to become ambush-from-below predators...
