The List of <3, rev. 7

Sep 29, 2009 23:14

(Update: There are a few more links, including a couple for the Emma Thompson thing. Thanks! CMM)

(Note: This list is cross-posted to both LJ and Dreamwidth, but the comments are all different--if you want to read the other comments, hit the other link. Probably shouldn't have cross-posted, huh?)

So, the blogosphere is aflame with rage about the various artists that we all love that think Roman Polanski should be off the hook. And rightly so--it's fucked up and very discouraging and disheartening.

But there are a few artists who've come out to say WTF with the rest of us, and I was thinking it would be cool to compile a list of them, just to counter the discouragement of the petition fighting Polanski's extradition. (Is that even a word? Discouragement, I mean.)

(Note: There's a petition supporting the extradition and arrest now. Also, if you want and are on Twitter, there's a hashtag and whatnot: '#artdoesnotexcuserape. Polanski needs 2 b prosecuted. http://tiny.cc/EeMKc. Please RT' Also, there's a Facebook cause, to counter the Facebook account in support of Polanski.)

(Note2: Another petition, over at the Big Hollywood site, specifically aimed at people who work in or are associated with the entertainment industry. There are some awesome names on that petition, if you want to peruse it. ETA: The folks at the New Agenda have a petition, too.)

So, here's who I know of (links tidied up and some of my parentheticals removed--obviously not all--I do so love my parentheticals). These are from all over the place, and they're in the order I came across them or was told about them. As someone noted below, not all the Twitter accounts are verified. I feel highly confident that Jay Smooth's is him, since the link is from his blog site, and I feel very confident that Michael Cudlitz is him, based on all his on-set photos from Southland. There's also confirmation from a poster on the DW version of this that says Lexa Doig is really Lexa. I can't speak to the others that aren't verified, though my general sense from looking at their tweets and links, etc., is that they all seem legit to me. I'll indicate which ones are verified.

(A note about being verified on Twitter--not very many people are verified because it's still in beta and Twitter hasn't released it for general use. They're only using it for people who've had impersonators, so just because these folks are not verified doesn't mean it's not them.)

Geraldine Ferraro and others (NY Time blog with multiple posts by different people--I didn't have time to read the whole thing, but I did see that some of them are on the side of "hey, not a big deal" so if that's triggery for you, you might pass on this one. Ferraro supports extradition.)

Wanda Sykes (Huffington Post)
Elon James White (This Week in Blackness video blog--the Polanski bit is at the end, about 4:55, but you should totally watch the whole thing, because he's awesome.)
Jamie Foxx (CBS/AP article)
Ze Frank (Twitter)
Emma Thompson (News blogs--At least in theory--she was on the petition, and someone talked to her, went over it with her, she says she's taking her name off the petition now.)

Valerie Meachum has a list over on her blog, too. I've grabbed the names I didn't have, but hers is more entertainment-industry-focused, which might be useful if my list is getting confusing. :D

Related, but not by identifiable people: A good article in the Washington Post. And this is a point by point refutation of the arguments on Polanski's behalf.

Others, anyone? I'm happy to add names. :D

Also, damn, kudos to the folks who did the links-collection for racefail and other issues we've struggled with in the past year, because even this one post is a lot of work. I can't even imagine, if there were zillions of links every day for weeks on end. (Not that I'm complaining, just sort of marveling. Don't let this stop you from sending me more links, OK?)

And you guys are all awesome and make me cry and damn.
