Apparently, today is the day I spam y'all.

I just found this quote very interesting, from this Tom Ricks post about female Marines in Afghanistan:

i can't remember if we've talked about the lioness program before, but if you haven't seen it already, definitely check it out. granted, it's more about the effects of combat on the women who compromised these early teams (mostly army, and in iraq) and not on their successes in afghanistan, but i still think you'll find it interesting!

one of the women profiled is from a little town not all that far from here, so it's possible i found it extra compelling because of that, but i don't think so. you'll have to let me know. :)

I did not know that the US Military did not have female soldiers in combat (or "allowed" them to be in combat). I think Canada's had women in combat roles since the late '80's. However, they don't make it easy to get those roles.
