A 3-year-old boy who died after being shot in the chest last night inside the Lynnewood Gardens apartment complex has been identified as Jacob Rivera.

Cheltenham Police Chief John Norris said the incident is under investigation.

Norris said the incident was reported around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, shortly after the boy was shot at his home in the 7700 block of Wagner Way, in the township's Elkins Park section.

Police said the father was enroute with the boy to the hospital, when he flagged down a private ambulance. Norris said the ambulance was already carrying a patient, but they dispatched Cheltenham police for assistance. The boy was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, where he died at 9:55 p.m., Norris said.

Norris said no one was in custody and no charges have been filed.
