i am SO GLAD that i'm not the only one who had that sinking feeling in my stomach when they started making a massive deal out of the fact that the shooter was originally from korea. and why is it that it's always somewhere in MICHIGAN that people go nuts and freak out and get all "OMGWTFBBQ ATTACK ALL TEH FOREIGNERS!!!"
i mean, i know it happens other places too, but we mitteners sure seem to see more than our fair share of it.
It's just terrible. Korea had nothing to do with this. To think that there are still lingering sentiments from the Korean War, or that new ill-regard has been bred from this incident, is more than a little upsetting. I just don't get why our culture has to be the least forgiving and tolerant one on the planet.
it's so hypocritical that as a nation, we are so frightened by fundamental islamic nations... because the radical right here is equally frightening to me. it's the sime kind of narrow-minded hatemongering that they THINK they're fighting against.
and it's not just limited to that. domestic terrorism is so prevalent, and just so accepted. i know that's completely unrelated, but waking up to the particular supreme court decision i did has it on my mind.
but yeah. so we're concerned about korea and nuclear weapons and whatnot. it scares me that we're willing - and our media is enabling us - to draw all these ridiculous links. it's racism. it's disgusting. and i REALLY hope the government doesn't use it as fuel for another attack somewhere.
I think that would be a pretty incredible jump at this point. Not that the previous jump was obvious, but I think making this into a motivator for international aggression would seem totally bonkers.
Maybe it's about time to move to Canada or Europe or... anywhere.
You should hear what they are saying about Americans and gun control on this side of the ocean....we don't look good. I am also disgusted that the American response to violence is always more violence toward the entire ethnic/racial group that was involved. It happened post 911 to the Muslims and persons of Mid. Eastern descent (you should have lived in Detroit then....it was very close to riots between the huge Mid. East pop and everyone esle) and for some reason, is part of our impulsive American culture. what scares me about it are those who say that those of us who don't attack the foreigners are commiting treason, something I heard a lot of post 911 and I expect to hear now, as well.
That is SOOOOOO ignorant (not what you said, but the whole treason thing). Just like the fact that all the windows being shot out in Lansing yesterday were probably shot by one person with one BB gun. Does that mean I should go start shooting out the windows of all BB gun owners? Or better yet, of rusted out trucks with rebel flags for license plates?
I think Detroit is mildly scary on a good day. I can't IMAGINE that kind of clash going down there... it would be catastrophic. And for what? Did ANYONE living in Detroit at that time have ANYTHING to do with 9/11? I can't guarantee it, but I'd put my money on NO. Did ANY OTHER KOREANS ANYWHERE have ANYTHING TO DO with what happened at Virginia Tech? Even more certainly not! They have gone to great lengths to portray this kid as a loner who had no friends and who did not make social bonds. Does that mean he secretly spent all of his time receiving telegraphed instructions from Korea on how to proceed?
