Do you think that Debian and Ubuntu are "the same" or are they significantly different? Since I am a long-time Debian user, my judgement is cloudy on this issue.
Everything in Ubuntu is basically based on Debian, from the installer to apt to the repositories. The compelling feature for me is that Ubuntu has a very nice installer with a really sane default desktop (whatever the newest Gnome is), so you can install it without any planning and other people can use it right away. Other niceties are the regular release cycle (new version every 6 months), the relatively cutting-edge packages and basically a bit of the Debian cruft removed. It took the good parts of Debian and started from scratch. That said, I still prefer Debian because it has more packages and is still kind of the lowest common denominator. You don't have to worry nearly as much about it breaking some webapp you wrote three years ago, for instance.
I like them both for different reasons, I guess I'm saying.
