Honestly, any statement that begins with "all gender is..." will be automatically wrong, because it's a generalization so sweeping that it takes only one counterexample to disprove it. The cited people fucked up as soon as they started declaring FOR HER what Serano's gender is; that's for her to decide, and deserves respect.

With that said, yeah, my own experience is that my gender is purely performance (including audience participation/perception). So I also get cranky when people promptly flip it to "NO gender is performance."

Do you feel that as a small child you naturally behaved in a feminine way, but were socialized out of it? And that therefore your transition will involve rediscovering what was originally natural to you, rather than constructing something entirely new?
