So what happened at NJSCBWI?

I'll tell you, because I can tell you just can't go on until I do.

I met a ton of amazing people. Got to see friends I haven't seen in a year, and made new friends. My Facebook friends list has grown and I'm all the better for it. The workshops were mostly helpful, and I was especially happy about the historical fiction, voice, and Steampunk panels ( Read more... )

So good to see you! nancy_v June 8 2011, 20:44:46 UTC
I really feel for you. Been there before where an ed or agent gives you that blank stare and you wonder why the heck you're in this business. I still wonder this, but that's beside the point...
I've decided to stay away from agents for a while, as my track record has not been good, so when a friend asked me to check out Miss-I-Hope-It-Wasn't-the-Same-One-Who-Was-Mean-To-You at the conf, I almost didn't. I had made a first impression from a distance (based on our age difference and the fact she was new), and was pleasantly surprised.

It was great to see you, Miss Super-Tan Lady! I don't know if it was the same one, and if it was I'm glad you and she got along. She's probably a great agent and a nice person. There were a few young agents there; and some of them I talked to were much more personable. I'm sure she's the perfect agent for someone - another friend had a critique with this agent and had a much better experience.

Been there too. I was really excited to met this one agent at a SCBWI Agent Day event. In fact she was the main reason I even wanted to go. I researched her and it seemed like we would be a great fit. I was introduced to her and we didn't click at all. I was really disappointed. After the conference I still sent her the pages she requested only to get a form 'no'. I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised. Then I met another agent I thought clicked with me and got my vision of my story only to get a form 'no' from him too. So I guess you never know. Just chalk it up to experience and keep going at it.
