As for the need to fully listen stopping... I think it depends on the discussion topic and how important it is to listen at the time, more than how many years you've spent with a person.
Yay for livejournal! I think you're probably right about the importance of the topic of conversation being indicative of the attention being given. I was partially thinking of any version of a new relationship - friendship, romantic or work - where everything the other person says allows you to learn something new about their perspective, so there seems to be an innate tendency to hang on every word, regardless of how mundane the topic. I've been working to build new working and social relationships lately, and the amount of attention and thought i've been putting into a simple conversation surprised me.
