i'd recommend giving Nike free running shoes a shot, if for nothing more than to use as shoes to just wear around.

they are engineered to work certain muscles in your foot and lower legs in ways that most shoes, even of the athletic variety, do not. this is accomplished by emulating barefoot resposiveness while protecting your feet from inconveniences like broken glass, jagged concrete, dirt, etc...

personally, i love my nike frees. i feel like they either cure or prevent foot and lower leg fatigue whenver i wear 'em for a while. plus some frees come with + technology that, in brief, allows you to link an i-pod to the shoe and selects songs based on your walking/running pace.
