I have over $700 in my savings account towards the goal of getting my own apartment on January 2. I am looking for either a studio or 1BR that includes heat/hot water and doesn't cost more than $700/mo ( Read more... )

We only pay $750 for a three-bedroom with off-street parking (heat included). What a difference between Maine and CT, huh?

Connecticut is considered to be the richest state in the country. And also the most expensive. Yes, more than New York!!

Although, I wouldn't make in ME salary wise what I make here in CT so I am not sure if it would balance out or not.

Don't be afraid to haggle-if the place looks good,but slightly pricier than you wanted- say something like "gee i like the energy, but the cost is a little tight (look at your watch) I am supposed to look at another apartment at (insert a time one 1/2 hour from the time you are at)-however if I can get this place for X amount, I can just go over the logistics with you now-I can get you a money order right up the street today and be done with this. And remind them of your occupation-since you work in collections, then you already understand the value of a good score, it gives you credibility. Sometimes offering to help with the landscaping or shoveling in winter, yard maintenance for a lower rental works wonders ( ... )
