I've been to a number of Jewish funerals in my life (in fact, I've never been to any other kind), and they've all been closed casket. I don't know if this is due to tradition, or merely coincidence, but it strikes me as the only tasteful choice.
Seems like a good choice to me too. Having seen my dead grandfather all smoothed out and painted up with waxy makeup, I'd say that folks who choose that route are well meaning, but it strikes me as very odd.
