i dont think that it has ever been suggested by anyone credible that "intellgient design" is a scientific theory. it has arisen, i believe, as a rejoinder to the philosophical implications of materialist Darwinism. That is, Darwinism has been used to justify all different kinds of behaviors and is still used to reject certain world views, even if they may be based on metaphysical claims. I would be all for a "world religions" class in high school which teaches the origins, central beliefs, and current context of a cross-section of different beliefs, as well as atheism. And "intelligent design" would fit nicely into this class, as would other non-Judeochristian stories. But yeah, this is clearly ridiculous (although I wouldn't mind being taught by Dumbledore, as the above cartoon shows).
