... Moo? ...

So recently I've been thinking about the whole idea of becoming a vegetarian and eventually a vegan, but it brings about a major issue. In a week it will have been two years since a cow has entered my body, and that's a pretty cool feeling. I won't deny that I crave a cheeseburger, but whatever. There are decent enough substitutes. Anyway, the ( Read more... )

Some thoughts... duck02 November 11 2005, 00:10:04 UTC
I do not plan on changing my meat eating habits. However...here are some things that I've thought about...

The healthier you eat, the more it will cost you.

I can be unhealthy to be vegan, unless it is done really carefully.

When I think of animal rights I have to wonder if it's just survival of the fittest...if they had the chance, would they do the same to us? I feel like a freak for thinking that...and of course, just because the thought has crossed my mind doesn't mean it's exactly how I feel, just something to ponder.

I have never been a huge meat fan, but I've actually been trying to eat more lately since only eating eggs and bread has caused me to gain a great deal of weight. Interesting, eh?

I don't eat a lot of meat because it grosses me out, but I tend to agree with your "its already dead" feelings. I don't feel my personal boycott of the meat industry will make a damn bit of difference in a an animal flesh loving society, and yes, its a bigger waste to let it have died in vain. My advice is to limit your meat intake, like jeff said, eat more chicken than beef because its better for the environment, and if you feel really motivated, do some research to try to see which companies have gotten higher sanitary/humane treatment ratings, if that info is out there. And don't let it go to waste. We evolved as omnivores. It is natural. It requires ending life--animal and/or plant-- to sustain life. There is nothing wrong with this as long as it is done with respect.

I don't understand the idea that eating meat means we think we're better than animals. The fact of the matter is, our bodies are created and have evolved with certain things they need. We evolved with the capabilities to make catching meat easier. It's not a power trip.

I look at it like this:
My current favorite dinosaur is the Hadrosaur [duck-billed dinosaurs]. They were herbivores. Because their bodies needed to break down plants, they have a "tooth-battery" where all the teeth are kind of cemented together for grinding up plant-life. They start to evolve hoof-like appendages, and paddles for hands to help them get away from predators faster. In turn, the predators are getting smaller and wilier, with hollow bones and long hindlimbs with short forelimbs, and their bone structure keeps them up on their toes where they can run faster. The Coelosaur was not better than the Hadrosaur because it had wings and could catch it and supplied its body with energy by metabolizing the Hadrosaur flesh any more than the Hadrosaur thought it was ( ... )
