And the largest individual contributers? Elsa Broekhuizen, the mother of Blackwater founder Erik Prince, and Howard F. Ahmanson Jr., the reclusive theocratic millionaire who inherited $300 million from his philanthropist father at age 18.
Ahmanson summarized his political agenda as: "My goal is the total integration of biblical law into our lives."
Somehow I doubt that this is going anywhere. 501(c)(3) organizations are permitted to advocate issues, including ballot initiatives. Additionally, the LDS church avoided direct donations, instead encouraging individual members to contribute.
It would just make me really really happy if churches would start losing their exempt status as a result of dabbling in political campaigns. Actually, I dont think they should have exempt status at all, but we seem stuck with that. Least we can do is try to get them to comply with in the letter and spirit of the law. I think telling ones church members to go do a thing to influence an political outcome should count as being political.
Yes, I recognize nothing will come of this, but a boy can dream.
