cornrelish posted a link to OkCupid's political quiz. I feel that my results from this sort of quiz are very noisy, because the questions are not carefully worded (and perhaps I overanalyze). I'll break down a few from this one to show you my problems ( Read more... )

my answers depend either on personal beliefs which I make every effort to keep out of politics,

ok, how do you differentiate these? do you not think that your political leanings are based on or at least influenced by your opinions, especially when it comes to issues that are affected by social prejudices (or lack of)? if yours aren't many (most?) people's are. so the next question:

what do you base your politics on?

I explained that above:
Just because I think certain behavior is undesirable doesn't mean I want a law against it. Maybe I recognize that my opinion is only taste, or I prefer a cultural response to a legal one, eg censure instead of jail time.
Basically, force should be a last resort. Most social problems can be addressed with dialogue and education. (Or apathy, if that counts.)

I'm sure they are, but I like to dig into the opinions and determine which I can rationalize and which are just reptile-brain reactions.

But since we can't even agree on that, I prefer a fairly libertarian scheme which allows people to pursue their own ends, so long as they aren't destructive. Sometimes a group of people can democratically agree on certain goals, or to at least keep certain ( ... )
