Calling all guitarists

Jun 06, 2005 00:01

My not so ill spent youth was full of swiming/fencing/school/gaming/and geting naked with Lily. This left litle time for learning to play any instruments. Kinda my one regret, except that I really didn't have time for it. Enter the real world. Currently after work I go to my 'lil rented room in Baltimore and stare at the ceiling/watch shit TV ( Read more... )

If you want a decent starter guitar, go here. Most of those are quality Korean knockoffs of famous designs (Les Pauls, Strats, Teles, etc.). The Agile Les Paul clones are generally the best of the bunch, so that's probably the best way to go. The AL-3000 looks pretty fucking solid, but the $370 price tag is probably a bit much. The AL-2000 looks like a less expensive alternative, especially for a beginning guitar player.

In your situation, the smaller the amp/speaker, the better. Just make sure the amp you buy has a headphone line out, because not all do. As long as it's from a fairly reputable brand, you'll be fine. As for all the other crap: don't worry about it. As you get better, you'll learn what you like and what you don't.

Wow, harmony-central. That takes me back. <3 OLGA.

I know you're Mr. Electronic Music but if you get into guitar don't forget about acoustic guitar. It's less to lug, generally sounds better (IMO), and generally cheaper but it's harder to play. Get decent with an acoustic and playing electric will be easy as pie. I'd like to start playing again at some point.

Just learn the three finger movable power chord and you'll be rocking in no time.

Yeah Im shying away from acoustics cause they make a lot of noise and I dont want to bother anyone as I suck it. The electric option provides the headphones route.

If you're concerned with lugging, check out a mini amp. They're pretty sweet and, well, mini.

Here's a whole load of mini amps. The Marshall MS-2 looks okay, though, from skimming the reviews, the clean channel distorts a bit.

Whoa, I too have felt this guitar urge while doing some ceiling staring here. The one problem though is I have no real interest in actually learning, ya know, chords and all that- just making cool sounds Kevin Shields style with the headphones. I'd probably get all sorts of shiny effects pedals then just find some random shitty guitar and go crazy with it/gaze at shoes/become big in Japan.

Actually wait, a danger with my approach is the Joe Miller phenomenon of buying a bass and playing it incessantly without knowing anything about it simultaneously annoying all within rane. Trying to play scales while Evan Chan cringes from his desk.

This has also given me the idea of Evan Chan the rapper (MC Chan) who instead of dissing wack MCs turns his wrath to wack musicians. Sample lyric: "Call that e flat?/ You wack/ Here's the drumline video which proves that I'm the mack/ Beware my Warhammer attack" etc.

With this song, Master Chan graduates to Grandmaster Chan and the 36 Chambers of Flash.
