mar·i·on·ette / noun
a puppet worked from above by strings attached to its limbs.
flick a wrist, pull a string
why, what a lovely marionette!
uniform perfectly in place
not a string out of place
(ah, the strings keep them in place)
flick a wrist, pull a string
she's put on the stage, lowered down by ropes
the lights blind her
the movements to memorise overwhelm her
(she doesn't know what to feel)
flick a wrist, pull a string
she's got a script to write
she's got a deadline to meet
or the strings will be deadly
(they slice deeply)
flick a wrist, pull a string
her hand paints words onto her script late into the night
shadows are painted beneath her eyes
(it's alright, as long as she survives the fight)
flick a wrist, pull a string
she puts up a show with the rest of the puppets
and she watches as the ones who aren't good enough get snap-
-ped in half
(they say the stage is like a gladiator's pit)
flick a wrist, pull a string
jerk, jerk, jerk.
she's told how to be perfect
but not how to deal with the strings that only slice her up
every
single
day.
(ouch, perfection hurts.)
flick a wrist, pull a string
she dances across the stage, arms and legs moving methodically
too quick for the audience to see
too fast for them to catch the cracks in her skin
and behind the curtains is where the strings can't hold her up any more
so she crumbles
to
pieces.
