written because of the vile #shoutyouradoption hashtag on twitter some time in 2015 which is basically a counter to #shoutyourabortion. in other words, the adoption hashtag was filled with pro-lifers shaming pro-choice people. in my words, these people can screw right off.

because abortion is murder
because abortion is selfish
because abortion is vile,
repulsive, immoral, wrong.
because when a girl is raped
she should be spending
night after night after night
taking five consecutive showers,
clawing at a skin that is
no longer hers, a skin marred
by the fingerprints of a boy
who has yet to understand
that no doesn’t spell yes.
because she should be forced
to give birth to the child of somebody
who inflicted so much pain and trauma on her.
because she should spend the rest of her life
looking at a human borne from her body
and seeing only the face of the cruel boy
who ruined her mind and soul and body.
because when a girl makes a mistake
with a drunk boy in a bedroom
she should drop out of school because
nobody wants to be friends with a slut.
because she should spend a lifetime repenting,
she should work herself to the bone:
cleaner by morning, waitress by noon,
dishwasher by night.
and at eleven pm she should return home
to change the diaper of a child she never wanted.
because there is no story behind every abortion,
no guilt weighing on the shoulders of a woman
lying on the operating table, no pain felt
when foreign tools are placed in her body
to suck a fetus out.
because it is pro-murder not pro-choice
because women don’t get a say in their own lives
because we are not allowed to feel at home
even in the body given to us at birth
because this body has never belonged to us.
