As usual, I had to cobble this episode together through clips found on Youtube (my VCR is notorious for eating tapes or just randomly taping something I never wanted, and I close the pharmacy Friday nights so I don't get to watch live). As a result - I missed a small chunk in there, from the time Oliver says he was five years old when his parents died to.....well, I guess the last Lois/Clark scene at the Planet. I'm not sure if there were any other scenes in between - I couldn't find a last part to the episode anywhere (which is an ongoing problem), but I managed to find that Clois clip. So if something really important happened in there....uh, feel free to let me know.
ANYWAY. Truth be told, I had completely forgotten what this episode was supposed to be about, except I thought there was something about Clark asking Lois out and then, somewhat unintentionally, standing her up. I had blanked on Clark reading other people's thoughts, which was a nice surprise. (However, I am still confused as to why he could only hear Lois's thoughts at first. Was it because she was the first person he saw after it happened?)
This episode was chockful of Clois, which made me kind of giddy. I love how it's just kind of an accepted thing where they have feelings for each other. Before the last few episodes, it could have gone in another direction if you wanted it to. You know - like Clark is just protective of her, or whatever. But now, they both seem to be putting it out there pretty consciously that they're into one another. Eeep! I love good ol' romantic tension where the audience is like "Just KISS her already, man! You both want it to happen!"
Toyman never really overwhelmed me, either here or in his first appearance, but I could understand his need for vengeance. Oliver did frame him for murder, after all. I guess that's what the whole link here is - vengeance. Oliver killed Lex out of vengeance for his parents, and Toyman went after Oliver out of vengeance for being framed for Lex's death. Does anyone else think Lex would totally enjoy the ongoing cycle that he in part created?
I'd like to see more done with Oliver/Tess.....I think I said before that she has felt pretty isolated from the other characters this season. It's nice to see her get tied back in to that, especially since it involves Oliver....a character who is actually IS trying to isolate himself. I loved their scene together, where they both opened up and then immediately shut down and covered it up with anger and sarcasm.
Something else I've already said, and will continue to say: Jor-El never ceases to fill me with glee. He is so DISDAINFUL. The only time I've seen Clark show that kind of attitude is when he wasn't actually Clark, but Lionel pretending to be him. (And yes, for the umpteenth time, that IS my favorite episode in the entire world).
I'm still torn on Chloe. Her arguments were very valid and made a lot of sense, but at the same time, I still get a sour grapes feeling from her. It feels like she still resents the fact that Clark could cut her off so easily, but now he can't stay away from Lois for a second. I waver between thinking her jealousy is romantic-based or sidekick-based. Most of the time, I lean towards sidekick. She was Clark's partner in crime (so to speak) for so long, it's hard for her to see someone else help him out and be his confidante - especially when that someone is Lois, whom Chloe has had sparks of jealousy with since day one.
On the other hand.....yes, she had a good point. Clark very well COULD hurt Lois, in many ways. I'm pretty sure the fact that Clark left Chloe behind also plays into this. She knows that he could always decide to pull another disappearing act for one reason or another, and where does that leave Lois? Besides that, there are the obvious concerns about whether Lois could be in danger from being near Clark, or how Lois would feel once she found out who Clark really is, etc. So yeah, that does make sense, and though there was that part of me that sensed jealousy, I also felt just as strongly that Chloe IS concerned for her cousin. If that makes any kind of sense.
Random thought: I missed Emil in this episode. Can you imagine Clark reading HIS thoughts? That would be hilarious.
Next week: Oliver's Downward Spiral, Part 436, and I cross my fingers that I can locate the entire episode - including the last eight minutes - for once in my life.
~&~&~
I mentioned awhile back that I'd found a movie, Her Minor Thing, that starred both Christian Kane and Michael Weatherly. So many pretty boys! Of course I caved and bought it, since it was pretty cheap. And....you know, it's okay. Is it the most engrossing or brilliant movie I've ever seen? Uhm, no. I'd probably shrug it off without a second thought if not for the aforementioned pretty boys. But it was cute enough for what it was (girl is still a virgin and two guys compete to win her love, yadda yadda), and as one of the commenters said on Amazon......"I could watch Christian Kane make out with somebody all day long". Amen, sister.
