Twisted Fate Ch.3

His mind was blank. What could he say? This whole ordeal was just miraculous. Chinen sat in his swivel chair, one leg propped above the other and leaning forward getting a good look at the MRI scans that he took during Umika’s check up. Not once...has a single patient ever had anything similar to his mothers situation. Yet here he was staring at the closest thing to what his mother had to go through. Her whole nervous system would eventually be affected.

“Fascinating isn’t it? How ones nervous system could take a turn for the worse at any given time without notice.” Just a couple steps away behind, his father stood staring from behind. Chinen didn’t need to look behind to know. His back has faced his father countless times as he talked, this wasn’t something unusual for him.

“Why did you tell the patient that we would take her? Why did you assign her to me? Because of mom? Is that it?” He stood staring straight through his father as he spoke. Hands balled into fists as they clenched tightly. “You are a doctor with much potential that you seem to be unaware of or you are either refusing to live up to that potential.” His voice was monotone with no emotions, nor sense of being alive. This was how it’s been all these years. Chinen knew, so he never complained about the loss of his mother or did he show pain or loneliness to his father. He knew that his father had lost the love of his life, the person he loved the most, the person he tried so hard to hold onto but had her slip through his fingers. His father taking silence as an acceptance to treating the patient began to make his way out the office.

“What if I can’t save her?” Stopping in his tracks his father stood still. “That would be a first for you then wouldn’t it Yuri?” With the last words said he walked out the office, leaving the door open. Taking small steps, practically dragging his feet, Chinen walked over to his desk. Slowly reaching his hand out as he gently picked up a picture frame, that held an old picture of 10 years ago. A young boy in his mother’s embrace filled with love and laughter as the father held his hand. How times has changed he thought. Slowly closing his eyes he imagined his mothers warm embrace around him once more, he imagined the sweet scent of her hair and her soothing voice. Taking one deep breath he opened his eyes and walked out into the halls of the hospital.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Would it be alright for her to have a little hope? Would it be okay for her to have a little faith in her survival? Her heart was broken several times as the past doctors have stomped on it and thrown it about, as her own parents threw it away and never turned back. Would it be okay?

“I see the nurse has already sent you to a room.” Umika sat wide eyed staring up at the stunning man in the door way. “I’m sorry but uhmm...it’s making it a little difficult to breath properly if you stare at me so intently....” Embarrassed and flushed tomato red Umika hid her face underneath the safety of her hands. “I-I’m so sorry” He couldn’t help but smile, no matter how you looked at it this girl was just like a child, an innocent child.

“It’s okay.” Finally calmed down, Umika looked up and nodded. “Was there something you needed to tell me?” After all he did walk all the way over to the room she was now admitted to, he must have had some business with her. Nodding, Chinen dragged the stool in the room over to where she was so he could sit and talk. “I only have a few questions, could you possibly answer them for me?” “Well I can try to.” Grabbing his small notepad from his pocket and a pen he began his questioning. “Do any relatives that you know have this illness?” “No, I’m the only one.” “When did it start?” “It was never determined when...I was never the healthiest child, and so we thought that was just me having a weak immune system. But by the time I turned 15 things took a turn and my life was on the line almost everyday.”

“Well Umika, I am sure you are fully aware of the circumstances you are dealing with. So I shall be truthful with you. In the current day and age we are in, we have yet to come up with a cure or way of preventing your illness with the technology we currently have. However we have had a patient with possibly the same illness as yours, either way it does show many similarities so I am more for believing it is the same that it being a different illness. It would be a big help if us doctors know precisely what your illness is, but right now we don’t even have a name for it. All we know are the possible symptoms and affects it has on the person. From what we have narrowed down, it is a neurological disease. Meaning this disease affects and attacks your nervous system.”

Her head was bent down, staring down at her hands, hair making it difficult for the poor doctor to make out her facial expression or if she was crying or not. Maybe he had gone to far? Reaching his arm out, ready to pat her back a sudden jolt came from her. Quickly placing his arms back to his sides, he watched as Umika stared at him with a smile on her face.

”I know, that fate isn’t on my side lately. I know it well. Life is something where we have to go through struggles with a smile on our face to survive. Sometimes, having a little hope and believing in it can really bring you far in life.” She wasn’t ready too let go and give up. She was just beginning. Nothing, absolutely nothing was going to stop her from trying.

“UMIKAAAA!” Screamed a frantic Mirai who ran into the room. Shocking both her friend and the doctor beside her. Stunned Chinen stood where he previously was like a stone. “He said I was short! HE CALLED ME SHORT! He’s freaking short too! Girl are fine when they are short but guys? Thats just weird! Apparently he hasn’t noticed that yet because he is SHORT SHORT SHORT!” Umika sat in her bed trying to register everything that was said. Mirai did have a knack for talking without pauses or periods. “Who called you short?” “THAT GUY!!” Mirai was making absolutely no sense to the poor girl. All she could really understand was that a guy called her friend short who then blew up in return. “What guy?” “He said his name was Ryo or something like that...” “Mirai are you talking about that other doctor that was with us earlier?” “YESSS HIM”

Trying to stifle her laughter Umika couldn’t help but find the two somewhat compatible. “Speaking about doctors....” Just like Mirai to jump from topic to topic. “What about doctors?” “Your doctor is pretty cute. Why don’t you date him?” “MIRAI HES MY DOCTOR” “Sooo?” A cough came from behind the two, reminding them that he was still there. Blushing Umika bit the bottom of her lip, filed with embarrassment for knowing he heard their conversation. Mirai on the other hand was delighted so see that he was there. She jumped off the bed and strolled over to him.

“What do you think of Umika, isn’t she cute?” “She is pretty, yes.” Honestly the doctor was trying to stay composed. He had never met anyone..or anything like Mirai. It could really be traumatizing on a person. Umika couldn’t help but feel sorry for him as she watched her best friend open his eyes to the weirdness that came with the world...or just came with Mirai.
