Doom Patrol (HBOMax, Season 3)

Our favorite immortal asshole misfits are back to ask, “WHAT THE F#$%?” for a third go-round.

At least they wrap up everything from the previous season in the first episode; this is another case where the first episode here really should have been the last episode of the previous season. (I’m honestly not sure how much of that was deliberate cliffhanger vs. covid restrictions.)

A big advantage this had over the original comics runs is that they actually pay off the foreshadowing in a nice tight way and also actually focus on the characters just as much as the monster of the week. That said, the Sisterhood of Dada was honestly underutilized; half of them never really did anything and their entire threat was being driven by Rita/Bendy. I hope they return in the next season. (I totally ship Jane/Shelly.)

The reveal that Cliff’s body is magical instead of just tech both totally makes sense and also makes everything Cliff does (including the zombie thing) make much more sense.

We wrap with: The Brain is dead, Mallah is gone, Cliff's body can be rebuilt but they need someone who knows how. Vic doesn't have powers and Jane has a new, mind-controlling power-hungry primary. Rita finally has both confidence and full control of her powers. Larry has a new negative spirit and still no idea what to do with it. And they just jumped into a weird and dangerous situation using a travel method that causes memory loss. Season 4 looks great, folks!

Overall: This was a pretty solid season and I was entertained. I’m sure the absurdity will get old eventually, but for now, I’ll continue to enjoy a brain in a robot body somehow becoming a zombie.
