sorry your 40th didn't turn out quite the way you wanted. I've long given up the thought of people coming my way for something special, I either go to them or it doesn't happen.

Oh no. My 40th was amazing. This wasn't meant as a woe is me, it was more a realization. And not even a bad one at that. More like a "huh. Well there you go"

I have been thinking about turning 40 for years now and what the party would be like and this lived up to all my expectations.

BUT, I have to totally agree with you on the, you've got to do it yourself or it won't get done mentality.
As one who enjoys entertaining and trying to build friendships, Jim and I used to have dinner parties, brunches, plan gatherings etc to bring people together.
And in the end, I would say 80% of the time there was no reciprocation. It gets tiresome.
I don't expect people to go all out like I am willing to. But some type of effort would be appreciated.
I have a friend we've known for years. We've had them to our home for multiple meals, parties etc and we have never been invited to their house. I actually find that a bit insulting.

We've stopped inviting people that don't reciprocate.
