Compulsary recycling in my area seemed like the best thing since sliced bread, and since it came into being I have been happily seperating my waste into the relevent bags and boxes all the while thinking that I am doing my bit for the environment ( Read more... )

My local council recycles glass and plastic bottles. I also keep newspapers and shredded papers for a company that operates a collection scheme. I save the plastic tops that come on milk containers for a book crosser's (Vespa) daughter. The tops are saved and sent to a hospice in Hampshire. I'll see if I can find out what my local council does with the containers.

Incidently, there was an article in the local paper about a lady who had collected 6,000 yoghurt and cream pots because they are not recycled.

Plastic bottle jumpers, that sounds promising, but it is a shame that we have so much plastic to recycle in the first place. If only manufactures would cut down on plastic packaging. I remember as a child we used to by our fizzy pop from the corner shop, it came in glass bottles. You recieved a few pence for every empty glass bottle you returned. We had a milkman then, and they would take your empty milk bottles and sterilise them for reuse. It's a shame that some of these old traditions have died. I think a lot of consumers are under the same misconception as I was- that plastic is recyclable and therefore environmentally friendly so that makes it okay to keep buying products in plastic bottles. Over the next few weeks I hope to try and reduce the number of plastic bottles I shove in my recycle bin. Wish me luck!
