Hakyeon sighed, resting his head on his hands. His math teacher was droning on about circles and tangents, drawing figures on the board, but he had no idea what was actually being said. There was too much on his mind, all of which seemed a lot bigger than hyperbolic geometry.

The bell didn’t ring soon enough, but when it did, he breathed a sigh of relief. That particular bell signaled the end of the last class period of the day. He was finally free; he could go home.

But Jaehwan had another idea, Hakyeon realized as he felt two hands on his shoulders which were already weighed down by his books. “What’s up?” he asked. He wasn’t speaking any differently than usual, but in Hakyeon’s mood his excited tone sounded shrill and unpleasant. He shrugged Jaehwan’s hands off of his shoulder and grunted in response. He realized as the other’s demeanour changed that he should have mustered up the energy to greet him in kind and fake a smile, but it was too late.

“Let’s go get coffee,” Jaehwan suggested.

Hakyeon made a face. “I have homework.”

“You’re not going to do it.”

“I don’t want to go.”

“I’ll drive.”

He opened his mouth to protest, then closed it. Jaehwan wasn’t going to let him be alone, and in the time they spent bickering he had probably missed the bus.

He slid into the passenger’s seat of Jaehwan’s car as if he was weighed down (and in a way he was), putting his bag on the floor in front of him between his legs. Jaehwan was whistling as he started the car, but quieted down when the radio started up. He was singing along under his breath as he backed the car out of its parking space, but stopped when he realized Hakyeon was silent.

They usually spent car rides singing along to the radio, but this time Hakyeon was staring out the window in silence. He didn’t feel like singing - he didn’t even feel like he could speak.

He didn’t know how long they had been in the car when he felt it stop and heard the rumble of the engine cut as Jaehwan pulled the keys out of the ignition. He looked up and saw that they were in front of the small coffee shop they often visited, just as Jaehwan had suggested.

“I really don’t feel like going in,” he murmured. He didn’t speak with much conviction, and his words were all blended together - Jaehwan could only make them out because he spent so much time around him.

Jaehwan’s concern grew more apparent on his face. “Do you want me to get you anything?” He knew Hakyeon would say no even before he shook his head, and when he did Jaehwan nodded in understanding. He didn’t leave the car, instead relaxing in his seat. He knew Hakyeon was unresponsive when he was upset, but the coffee shop had been a last ditch effort to try and shake him out of it. “Do you want to talk about it?” Hakyeon shook his head again.

Jaehwan reached out, taking his hand in his and interlocking their fingers. Hakyeon turned away from the window and stared at their hands blankly. It wasn’t a new sight to him, so he wasn’t dumbfounded or anything, it was simply that the numbness he felt made it hard to react.

“Come to my house tonight.” Jaehwan’s voice wasn’t pleading or demanding, but it was impossible for Hakyeon to refuse (especially since when he tried to say “no” Jaehwan butted in with “It’s Friday, Hakyeon”).

They didn’t remove their hands on the drive back to Jaehwan’s and they were hard-pressed to leave the car, but they managed and ended up finding themselves curled into each other on Jaehwan’s couch.

Jaehwan leaned over, pressing a kiss to Hakyeon’s forehead, and Hakyeon sighed, but this time in content. Jaehwan couldn’t fix everything, and the weight on Hakyeon’s shoulders wouldn’t quite leave, but Hakyeon couldn’t help feeling relieved in his presence. He wiped his eyes, thinking Jaehwan wouldn’t notice, but Jaehwan noticed everything. “What’s wrong?”

Hakyeon shook his head. “Nothing’s wrong, I’m not upset.” He adjusted himself so he could rest his head on Jaehwan’s chest and felt the other’s hand come to rest in his hair. “Thank you.”
