Taekwoon sighed, putting down his pencil and pinching the bridge of his nose. In front of him were several pages of math problems, half of which were solved, and it wasn’t that he was having a hard time solving the rest (he was actually doing pretty well), but that there was so much noise coming from the next room. Was it music? There was certainly a heavy bass beat pounding at the walls and some kind of guitar playing masked with distortion, and was that someone wailing over top of it? Were they supposed to be singing? He massaged his temples to try and ease his irritation. It wasn’t music, it was organized chaos, and he couldn’t work with it.

He stood up from his desk, ignoring the stares of several peers as he pushed his chair in and it squeaked against the tiled floor. When he left the classroom, the sounds were much louder and he wondered why he was the only one who seemed to have a problem with it. The music room was in the next hallway but it had walls against the classroom Taekwoon had been in. Schools that could afford full sound-proofing in practice rooms practically didn’t exist, but even then he thought that the noise level of the room was well above average tolerance.

He was going to politely knock on the door, except for the fact that the door was already open, so instead he walked in and tried to say “hello” nicely. Unsurprisingly, no one heard him, so he flicked the light switch a couple times, which worked better than he wanted it to. He had only wanted to come to the attention of one of two people, not have everyone stop what they were doing and stare at him in sudden silence. He tried to speak, and he honestly wasn’t trying to be rude or anything, but under the pressure of everyone’s gaze he only managed to get out the words “too loud.” He looked at his feet before registering anyone’s reactions.

“It’s okay,” someone said, but they weren’t talking to him, “I’ll take care of it.” They approached Taekwoon, tapping him on the shoulder before gesturing that the two of them leave the room to speak in the hallway, and Taekwoon nodded before shuffling out behind him. The person talking to him wasn’t that intimidating, just a student, probably younger than Taekwoon himself, but Taekwoon hadn’t wanted it to get this far. He figured if he just went and said something it would have been solved, but now it was taking a lot longer than he anticipated and he was wishing he had just stayed quiet and waited for someone else to say something. “Don’t I know you from somewhere?” the other asked.

Taekwoon nodded, introduced himself and said they were in the same science class, and the kid introduced himself as Jaehwan. He then explained that he hadn’t meant to be rude in the first place and was just trying to study and it was hard to concentrate with how loud the music or whatever was and Jaehwan must have known he was flustered because he stopped him mid-sentence, chuckling, “Well, why didn’t you say that in the first place?” and then clapped him on the shoulder. “I’ll make sure to quiet it down.” He smiled, eyes closed and teeth flashing, and Taekwoon didn’t notice that he had tripped over his own feet in a rush to get back to the other classroom until Jaehwan grabbed him by the arm and pulled him back up. “Be careful,” he said, voice playful, and Taekwoon nodded before turning to go back the way he came. He didn’t look back until he heard the door close and when it did he released a breath he hadn’t known he was holding.

He went home early that day. He couldn’t concentrate on his studies after he returned to the classroom and kept seeing the other boy’s smile in a flash of white in his mind, leaving him in a bit of a daze and with a strong desire to see him again.

The next day he ditched his after school studying for a second time, but this time it was to watch and listen rather than complain.
