A/N: i'm sorry. i recently saw the movie secret in their eyes and i was inspired.
Hongbin rubbed his eyes as he struggled to open them, looking around to see that the room was still dark. Of course it would be. His alarm clock was reading 3:00 A.M., which althought it was the time he set it for it didn’t make him any less unhappy about it. He reached over to turn the alarm off and sat up to get out of bed, but before he could move he felt a pair of arms around his waist.
“Do you have to go now?” Hakyeon murmured, words slurred with sleep. He rested his head on Hongbin’s shoulder. “I want to sleep.”
Hongbin moved so Hakyeon’s head was no longer rested on his shoulder and turned to kiss his forehead. “You can sleep while I’m gone.”
Hakyeon shook his head. “No, I can’t. I’m always worried. I have to see you come home myself.”
Hongbin nodded as he stood up so he could get dressed. He knew Hakyeon worried about him when he was gone, but it didn’t change the fact that there was a job to be done.
When he left the bedroom, Hakyeon was waiting for him on the couch. He was wrapped up to his neck in a soft, white blanket, hands on a coffee mug and another identical mug sitting on the coffee table next to him. He shrugged. “I figured you’d need it.”
He took it, smiling as he took a sip, trying to ignore that Hakyeon had put too much sugar in it. “Thank you.”
“Do you really have to go in this early?” He was pouting, but it wasn’t to be cute. He was genuinely disappointed.
Hongbin stood with one knee on the couch and knelt down so they were at eye level. “I’ll be back by one. I should be waiting for you when you get back.” He smiled bigger that time, enough for his dimples to show.
But Hakyeon wasn’t convinced. “Please come back in one piece.”
“Hey,” Hongbin’s smile was replaced by a more serious expression, and he put down his coffee so he could place both hands on either side of Hakyeon’s face. “Look at me. Nothing is going to happen. I promise.”
A sigh, and Hakyeon averted his eyes. “This is a city. You work in the homicide division because things happen.”
“I’ve come back every time before that.” He moved Hakyeon’s bangs from his face and kissed his forehead. “It’ll be okay.”
Hakyeon finally relaxed, but Hongbin knew he wasn’t convinced. He gave him one last kiss, on the lips that time, before grabbing his coffee and closing the door behind him.
------------------------------------------------------------
It ended up being a very slow day, and Hongbin was in the middle of crumpling up a spare piece of paper. He was going to throw it away but then Wonsik walked up to him.
“What are you doing?” he asked and sat down at his desk that was next to Hongbin’s. Hongbin ignored him, instead tossing the ball of paper at him so it bounced off of his forehead and then let out a long sigh. Wonsik picked it up out of his lap and then threw it back, but it missed and landed a few feet from Hongbin’s chair, and neither of them wanted to get up to get it.
He looked at the clock and whined when he saw it read 10:26 A.M. “It’s not even 10:30 yet.” He was pouting. He looked pathetic and childlike, but he didn’t care. He didn’t have anyone to impress right at that moment.
Wonsik chuckled. “Do you have anything special planned today or something?”
Hongbin shrugged. “I didn’t at first, but Hakyeon was really upset when he saw I was leaving so early. He always worries when I’m gone, even though he has no reason to - although I guess that’s better than not caring at all.” Wonsik nodded in understanding. “I was thinking of taking him out to the restaurant he likes. I’ll be home first today, so it will be easier to surprise him.”
“You’ve been thinking about this a lot, huh?”
“It’s all I can think about today,” he admitted. He looked at the clock again and only two minutes had passed. “He must be really busy today.” He picked up a pen off of his desk and started clicking it repeatedly to give his hands something to do. “He usually texts me when he gets to work, but he didn’t today. Sometimes he’s just busy and forgets, but it’d help me relax if he said something.” He looked over and saw Wonsik was laughing, although he was doing a good job at keeping it contained. “What?”
“Why don’t you text him yourself?”
Hongbin paused. “I didn’t think of that.” He pulled out his cell phone and started the text, but they were interrupted by someone telling them that there was a body found in an alley, and they were wanted to take a look. He left his phone on the desk as he left, message unfinished and forgotten.
He couldn’t relax on the entire ride to the crime scene, his knee bouncing constantly. His first look was always the worst, and he never quite got used to the initial shock, he only got better at finding ways to hide it.
By the time he and Wonsik parked and got out of the car, he was able to get his nerves under control, but they only skyrocketed when one of the other officers on the scene saw him and quickly ran up to stop him. His name was Taekwoon and they knew him well, but he seemed to be shaken up by something.
“What’s wrong?” Wonsik asked.
Taekwoon shook his head and gestured to Hongbin. “He shouldn’t be here.”
Hongbin was confused. “What? But they need me to-”
Wonsik silenced him with a hand. “I’ll go take a look,” he said, putting on a pair of latex gloves. “You stay with Taekwoon for a few minutes, okay?” He saw him open his mouth to protest. “I’ll call you over when I’m done.”
Hongbin nodded reluctantly. “Okay.” He bit his lip nervously as he watched Wonsik approach and heard him say a few hushed words to the officers standing around the body. It was clearly male, although face down, dressed in only a large grey shirt that went to his mid-thighs.
“Can I turn him over?” he heard Wonsik ask, but when he was given the okay he only got about halfway before stopping and bringing a hand to his mouth.
“What’s wrong?” Hongbin asked, looking at Taekwoon. To his credit, it looked like he was trying to explain. He kept opening and closing his mouth but nothing was coming out, and it was making Hongbin feel worse. He left Taekwoon’s side, wrenching himself free when the other grabbed his arm, and approached Wonsik. He got halfway by the time Wonsik stood up and turned around. There were tears in his eyes and on his cheeks. “What is it?”
Wonsik shook his head. “Please don’t look.” Hongbin naturally tried to look past him, but felt Wonsik’s arm on his shoulder. “I’m sorry.”
“Wonsik,” Hongbin’s voice was desperate, “please tell me.”
“I’m sorry,” he repeated. “It’s,” he trailed off and took a deep breath before trying to speak again, “It’s Hakyeon.”
“What?” He started to shake, and Wonsik averted his eyes, staring at his feet. Hongbin looked to Taekwoon, who also lowered his eyes, but nodded in confirmation. He looked back at Wonsik. “This isn’t funny.” No one said anything, and he thought he saw Wonsik wipe a tear from his face. He looked past Wonsik without being stopped, and he couldn’t believe his eyes. He started to shake, then suddenly lunged forward, trying to get to the man on the ground, but Wonsik grabbed him, holding him back, and Taekwoon ran over to help. “Let me go!”
“Hongbin, you can’t.” Wonsik held onto him tighter. “If you touch anything we can’t use it to solve this.”
“I don’t care,” he whimpered. “I just want..I want him, please.” He switched his focus from struggling to escape Wonsik and Taekwoon’s arms to beating his fists on Wonsik’s chest and started wailing. No one else at the scene knew what to do, they just stood where they were with looks of sympathetic sadness on their faces.
Hongbin made one last attempt to get to Hakyeon but neither of the men holding him back gave in. He felt his knees give out beneath him and next thing he knew he was sitting on the ground in a heap with his head in his hands. Wonsik and Taekwoon’s strong holds turned to warm embraces as he sniffled and began muttering nonsense about trading places with Hakyeon or how it should have been him instead.
If nothing had happened, he would have been back at the apartment by then, getting ready to surprise Hakyeon, waiting to see his smile when he walked in and saw Hongbin was there, just as he promised.
Instead, he was sitting on the damp pavement, crying for a night lost, along with the loss of countless others. He tried his best to imagine Hakyeon smiling, but thoughts of how scared he must have been kept flitting in and out of his head.
He took a deep, shaky breath and wiped the tears from his cheeks, but they still wouldn’t stop. “I’m sorry,” he muttered. “If I had just stayed home…” He didn’t finish the sentence, but he didn’t need to for everyone to know what he meant. If he had just stayed home, maybe he could have stopped it.
