Summary: Chad was in a rotten mood. No other way to put it. Is it possible that a simple letter can cheer him up?

Chad Danforth was in a rotten mood. There was no other way to put it. This week, he’d had to run extra laps twice because he had been five minutes late, one of his profs had given him a lecture in front of the entire class because he was the only one who hadn’t brought in his report, and to top all of it, he didn’t have a Valentine’s date.

Chad was in a rotten mood. And that was the reason why he kept honking at the cars in front of him that were driving too slowly for the entire ride home, why he threw the door shut behind him that loudly of both his second-hand 4 x 4 and the front door of his home.

Without responding to his parents’ greet, he ran up the stairs, stamping loudly with every step. Then the door of his room was slam shut loudly. He dropped his bag on the ground and threw himself on the bed. He stayed like that for a few moments, then kicked off his shoes, buried his head in his pillow and tried to get himself comfortable.

Sometime later there were footsteps on the stairs and a knock on the door. Chad knew it was his mother. He tried to make a “Yes!” heard without getting his head his pillow. He heard the door opening and felt how his mother sat down on the side of the bed.

“Are you all right?” she asked.

Chad turned so he was facing the ceiling. His eyes were still closed, though. “Just… nothing,” he sighed. “I had a rotten week at school.” She nodded a bit and opened her mouth to say something, but Chad beat her to it. “I don’t wanna talk about it.”

She nodded again. She stayed sitting for a few seconds, then stood up and said: “Well, if it can help any bit, this came with the mail today.”

Chad opened his eyes and saw an envelope lying on the side of his bed. He looked up and wanted to ask his mother who and how and what, but before he had the chance, the door softly closed.

Chad sat up straight and took the envelope in his hands. It was light pink with hearts all over it. One of those typical Valentines envelopes. Chad turned it around. No sender. He examined the envelope a bit closer, trying to recognize the handwriting. Then he saw it, the mark on the stamp. New York City.

Maybe this wasn’t that bad Valentine’s Day after all, Chad thought as he opened the envelope with a smile and took out the letter.
