dogwood before and after

Just had a tussle with the my red-twig dogwood. It had spread to where it was taking over the walkway and interfering with the driveway, at least with getting into and out of the passenger side of the car,plus encroaching on other plantings so I had to cut it back. Dogwoods can be hard pruned as much as you want - in fact, they love it! You can cut your bush right down to about a foot high (hack right back down to the stump at the base, leaving well placed stems coming off it - leave about 4 inches on each stem) in spring, before the leaves start to open. By winter, you will have a mass of gorgeous new red stems to admire.
