Alright, so, what was that all about. Kevin described it pretty well. Last week was Congress's last week in town before adjourning for a month, until after the Labor Day holiday (if you think that's a long vacation (technically "district work period"), look at Britain: they're off until October). On Tuesday, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD ( Read more... )

With the exception of shady rulings from the chair, I find the above funny and entertaining and part of a lively political system, although it does prevent progress on some things that are you'know... important.

I also have some sympathy for Mr. McNulty; he sounded sufficiently contrite when he spoke on the floor of the House Friday morning that I believe that he made a mistake that could have been handled better. At the same time, the procedure that is usually followed is that the clerk counts the votes, writes the totals on an official slip of paper, and that paper is passed up to the speaker to read. In this case, both times McNulty announced a total, he had been passed no sheet of paper; the announcement was clearly premature. Judging by how the vote ended up, at 212-216, it's clear that Steny Hoyer could've held the vote open to twist enough arms to get his way, he just...didn't. But you're right, there are two guys named Diaz-Balart, both from Florida, both who changed their votes, and I would believe that explanation more, had the clerk not announced that Mario Diaz-Balart had changed his vote right before the vote was gaveled closed ( ... )

I'm sorry i don't have the same kind of time to read (or, rather, i now spend my time reading technique journals). But, PLEASE, the more you write the more i learn :-)

I was going to ask someone in the area if maybe that was the case; maybe it's just really hot, and that gets people on edge or something. You can be as proud of Steny Hoyer as you want, but I still don't think that he's your congressman (but he is close, if you lived a little further south and east, he would be); I think that honor goes to Chris Van Hollen (D-MD 8th district)...yes, I had to Wikipedia that, I didn't know that off the top of my head ( ... )

I really need to work on getting less verbose; a 600-word comment to a 1700-word entry seems a little over-the-top.
