Heh, yeah. I've never tried to read Les Mis but when I was in college and my friends and I were all HUGE FANGIRLS/BOYS for the musical one of my friends read the book and thought it was a horrible slog. So they don't really have much of a relation to each other in terms of pacing and whatnot.
I have never seen the musical or movie or anything either. Everyone is all "the songs are stuck in my head argh!" and I'm blissfully ignorant of them. But yeah, sometimes you just like one version of a thing and not the other version.
Meh, it wasn't that good of a book when I read it, but the musical is somehow both less and more than Hugo's original. I tried the book again in middle school, but it still sucked.
Also, why were your parents still giving you books at nine? Mine were just dropping me off at the library and telling the librarians to let me read whatever I wanted. Much easier for all parties.
There are many things much higher on my to-read list.
Oh, we got loads of books from the library, too. But we did own books as well and generally that's what they gave us as presents, because they knew that's what we would like. Also I think my father has a thing for inscribing books when he gifts them.
