being polite

 Recently my therapist (T) asked me why I said would be nice and polite even to people I didn't like. It was in response to me describing my interactions with my colleagues and students.

:) you don't have to stop being a nice person when you say you felt hurt and offended. stating how you felt and helping the other person recognize your feeling, regardless the other person's intention, is important so we learn and grow. it takes vulnerability on your side to state your feelings, but vulnerability is not the same as weakness, just as silently suffering is not the same as strength.

Thank you, I appreciate that. It is interesting to say that vulnerability and weakness are not the same thing. I often believe that being strong means having really thick skin and being unaffected but I'm starting to think otherwise.
