I couldn't agree more... I remember reading a pretty cool philosophy somewhere: "I believe you; now show me." Seems like a good way to approach things.
At the same time, I don't think we've developed enough to have a comprehensive grasp on reality. If such a thing can exist.
I think it's critically important that we make intelligent contact with the sentient life forms that share this planet with us; we're so concerned with communicating intelligent extraterrestrial life, yet we haven't even bothered to communicate with the other thinkers on this planet. It would a crucial case-study in the origins and functions of intelligence, if nothing else.
Perhaps in time, as we evolve greater capacity for intelligence, we'll be able to truly comprehend the scope and sense of the universe around us. But I harbor some personal doubts and misgivings... I think it's more likely that for every new answer we find, that answer will provide us with ten more questions.
