And what I actually meant to do this evening was look at tape to mp3 recorders, as digitising on my old one takes ages. My laptop would be great but it doesn't have a line in socket, so an actual tape to mp3 recorder that works through a USB connection would be good :-)

Not sure how whizzy you want yours to be, but I bought one of these last year... http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008KGFMN6

Works fine, has auto-reverse, and can record into Audacity for me to fine tune.

Looks promising... There was the suggestion of a USB sound card with a line-in so I'll be looking at those as well :-)

My old computer is incredibly slow and took twenty minutes to export tracks when I was digitising stuff the other week (but it is twelve years old...)

I have to admit, my first thought is "new computer time" as exporting will still be snails pace on something like that, regardless of what you use to record. :)

I've got my shiny new (well, a year old) laptop which is what I'd like to be digitising on, but it's the lack of line in socket on it that stops me.

When I stop using the really old desktop computer for digitising I'm going to be running it down ready for eventually getting rid of it, as digitising is pretty much the only thing I use it for now. Sentimental value though... (Yep, it's easy to tell I'm not a techie at all... *g*)
