Amen, friend, amen. I believe one "I don't have anything to write" post is worth a warning, and two an unfriending. If you've nothing to say, why announce it to the room?
Ohhh, you covered it so much better though. I'd just be an echo.
But what the hell. Damn but I hate those annoying say-nothing journals! I've no illusions about appealing to the masses, but I at least put forth an effort and wish more would do the same. How can someone get anything out of posting blah blah blah? Or the journals that are nothing more than screeds? Gar. Now I'm all worked up and about two inches from taking a machete to my flist.
No kidding. It's like all other things in life. Only an elite few will ever shine in a given subject, but that shouldn't stop people from knowing the most basic rules.
In YCW, I set the baseline at a 4 if they manage to put together a good sentence anywhere in the last four entries. I hate how my standards have fallen.
I think it's good to see people post trivia and nonsense signifying nothing. I love them for their human-ness :)
I have unfriended people in the past because they post a lot, and it's all rubbish. This one person for example, posted nearly every day and described everything in minute detail. She also (because she was one of those with about 300 people on her flist) wrote in a "please pay attention because I am now talking about ME" sort of tone. Sadly, she had the unfortunate habit of being completely unable to mine the interest out of ANYTHING she did. Yet she was still able to write a thousand words on it. Possibly the worst writer I've ever come across. Add to that the fact she never once commented on my journal, and never once replied to any comment made on hers. THAT kind of thing irritates me more than the occasional "I have nothing to post. I'm so boring." type post. LSS - I unfriended her but she never noticed :P
You, by the way, are a top 1 or 2% LJ writer. IMHO of course.
Trivia once in a while is fine, but it's the extreme that annoys me.
By the way, unless I knew that chick IRL, I would have kicked her off of my list as well. I think you should pick and choose what you want to say about any given day--like I really want to know how many times you had to wash your hands AND why. Okay, no one I've read has been as bad as that, but I'm sure there's someone out there.
And thank you for your praise (I enjoy your journal as well). But if you want to read people who are actually top 1% writers as opposed to little old me, then omg you have to check out the following:
