Did your friend explain why the word is derogatory to you or just told you not to use it. I don’t know.. while I won’t say it, I don’t feel it’s in my place to tell other people. I think for Americans, it is bad because that word was used during WWII. The Merriam-Webster dictionary says that this word is used despairingly.

Anyway, I didn’t know Australian liked to argue lol. Maybe I’ll prove my Australian friend and see what happens.

But don’t lump all Americans together lol.

If it were me in you're situation, I'd probably say something along the lines of "I didn't mean any offence by using the term and I'm sorry you find it offensive but I've been using it nearly half my life with this being the first time anyone has taken it out of context."
But yeah... some people are so damn sensitive. The term 'racism' is used way too liberally these days.
And I quite enjoyed your summation of Aussie cultural points. Hope you don't mind but I showed this post to Rob cos I just had to share it with someone and he was the only one around at the time would I knew would appreciate it as much as me. His comments were something along the lines of loving your work (or just you... I can't remember exactly which)... but yeah *hugs*
Can't wait til you're here. We have to work out a day to catch up. I'm thinking of taking a day off work cos I'm owed one from a course I did. Email/PM me with details!
