I saw that you read My Antonia a while back. That's one of my favorite books. Have you read O Pioneers!? My Antonia is my favorite of Cather's novels that I've read (which includes One of Ours and Death Comes for the Archbishop in addition to the previously listed two), but I think everything she's written is good.

I also second the above recommendation for Arturo Pérez-Reverte. I think I've read everything of his except Queen of the South and I really liked them all. Along that vein, I might suggest The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, and also the Carlos Tejada Alfonso y Léon series by Rebecca Pawel.

I don't read a lot of fantasy/sci-fi, but in case you like Jane Eyre (and what's not to like, really?) you must read Jane_E, Friendless Orphan: A Memoir by Erin McCole-Cupp ( ... )

Yah, I actually had a professor my last year and a half of university that was somewhat of a Willa Cather scholar. He even studied her stuff at the University of Nebraska for his thesis or something. So we had My Antonia as a big portion of one semester and I did a paper on women's amorphous roles in harsh conditions. I bought some collection of her short stories afterward, but I never did finish them. And I haven't read O Pioneers. Would you recommend it?

Yeah.. I'm not usually huge into sci-fi but I do enjoy fantasy. However, I am trying to give a couple of sci-fi authors a chance since Mike is so into them.

Saw one of your latest posts - books on the space program, eh? :D That's awesome. I might have to check some of those titles out.

Thanks again, so so very much, for tonight. :) Can't wait to hang out again soon!

I do recommend O Pioneers!. A lot of people like it better than My Antonia, but the latter has a special place in my heart. There was also a great TV-movie adaptation of O Pioneers! starring Jessica Lange. I forgot that I had read Youth and the Bright Medusa, a collection of her stories, as well. I like the novels better, but there's just something about her writing that really speaks to me. She is so vividly descriptive and can turn something very simple into something very interesting. She won the Pulitzer for One of Ours, which is about a midwestern boy who feels stifled in his family and enlists in the army for WWI. We read Death Comes for the Archbishop for the book club I used to be in with Adam and Jessica (which disbanded) and I loved it. There isn't a lot that happens, but again, Cather's descriptive passages were amazing! Also, I loved that it took place in New Mexico because I've spent two summers there and it was fascinating how little had changed in some respects.

I'm not hugely into sci-fi, either. I suppose ( ... )

It's non-fiction, but.... akapinkie January 2 2008, 06:49:32 UTC
I recommend "Last Child in the Woods". It's about how children need nature and unstructured play. It's really interesting.

BTW, you read a LOT of books!! Good for you. I wish I had your dedication to reading.

I'd like to suggest all three books authored by Libba Bray starting with A Great and Terrible Beauty. I think you'd like them.

I actually just started that series. It's caught my eye before and I had talked my niece into trying them ages ago. Anyway, I'm only halfway through the first one, but I'm a little turned off by the author's narrative style. I dunno.. I'm just not a fan of Gemma so far and that's frustrating as a reader. But I won't give up, I do like the snippets of the mythology she seems to be using.

After reading the books by Stephanie Meyers, it is kind of hard for me to get into the third book by Libba Bray. I need to read it before the new semester starts. Hopefully I can get through this book and not quit it half way through. I need to finish reading it. Wish me luck!
