more often than not,
that effort to understand you (or me)
is part of determining how to pitch you;
what angle to play in marketing something to you;
or where to place the chisel before swinging the hammer...

yeah, i know this is coming from a catholic who still
thinks like a fundamentalist...

on the other hand,
learning a foreign language deepens and strengthens
one's understanding of one's native language,
and understanding you, personally,
in so far as i have to this point,
has done wonders toward enhancing my understanding of myself...

hmmm...
the more i think about this quote,
the less sinister it sounds...

because people who seek to harm me
have that same barrier,
that same discomfort...

and attempts to understand me,
however cloying or annoying,
are not so awful as efforts to kill or injure me...

it has also occurred to me that jackson pollock
could have said this same thing,
and probably did...
