I got a Happy Halloween text from my sister. She's so random. She can't be bothered to keep in touch in normal ways or, like, give me pictures of her babies, but she can text me first thing in the morning to say Happy Halloween. She's insane and I love her.
In my creative life...I used to draw a lot and took art in junior high and high school. I loved it so much it never occurred to me that anything would make me drift away from it. Nevertheless, that's what happened after high school. I'm sure part of it was the rude slap in the face that real life gives you when you take that first step on the road to adulthood, but I was also dealing with a severe depression and at one point, I even attempted to hurt myself. With that combination of variables in my life I gradually quit drawing.
Recently, I joined an art community. Originally it was just so I could look at the amazing talent that is in this world. Then, through friends I made, one in particular, I was encouraged to start sharing some of my own work. Mostly all I have up now is old work, but newer things are starting to creep in as I get back into my passion for creating in this way. Of course, I'm kicking myself now for the nearly 15 year hiatus. It really is true that if you don't use it, you lose it. I find myself struggling to do things I know used to be easier. But that's okay. I'll eventually get it back. And I'll probably get back into art classes again at some point.
The point of this entry is mostly to help explain why I'm so excited about some projects I'm working on. Obviously nothing will be ready for a while, or even terribly professional in quality when it is, but I've got two stories that I've started doing sketches for and I'm hoping to turn them into graphic novels I can share with my friends. One is the typical teen romance. It's definitely inspired by teen romance Japanese mangas. In fact, it's my tribute to them. Of course, it'll be in my own style, art and story-wise, but I love mangas so much. lol
My other idea is more fantasy based. Not that teen romance manga isn't pure fantasy...lol But this one will be set in a world that is other than the real one and of course there will be magic and swords and quests. I won't say too much more about it because it's just in the development phase right now and I'm hoping it'll be more unique when I get more of it done. Right now, it's obviously just another fantasy idea that's been done to death, same with my teen romance.
But I don't really believe in true originality of situation anyway. At least it's very, very hard to do and it's not like I'm an experienced and deep writer who can do that. My approach is to just tell stories I personally am interested in and hope that I can make my potential readers care about my characters. To me, that's success.
