The "oh good lord!" dresses

Sep 15, 2009 13:33

There are several lolita dresses which I really dislike and would never wear. So, this is a post of my personal taste ~

Please note - this is NOT a hate post. I have NOTHING against people who like/wear these dresses. This is just a personal rant.

So, shall we get started?
As stated above, I don't have any right to dictate what you should like or dislike; The point is that -I- find these dresses weird, and that's my personal opinion. Okay? Thank you.

So, the first dress I find quite unpleasant is the most loved and probably also the most hated sweet print from the japanese brand Angelic Pretty, and I'm pretty sure you all already know which one I mean.
Yes. Right. It's the Sugary Carnival AP print.

To be honest, I don't fancy sweet lolita prints at all. Sweet lolita is okay for me as long as it's kept in lookable bounds, which generally means it's just white, pink, with some bows in hair/on a dress, frills, cute socks, sweet
shoes and nicely done hair. Umm, poodle bags, head-eating bows, huge cakes/bears/unicorns/bunnies/macaroons/candies apliques/prints all over a dress/skirt? Sorry, I'm just not five anymore, so Angelic Pretty is pretty much out of my personal taste.
But that's just me and I don't find ANYTHING WRONG with other girls liking the brand! Lots of them look really good in AP's dresses.

The only thing I don't get is why the heck's Sugary Carnival print SO popular. Just type "Sugary Carnival" in flickr.com search, daily lolita and/or google pics and you'll instantly see what I mean.
Yes, the print is.. cute... I used to love the My little pony show when I was a kid, really. I like horses. Umm. Yes. Colorful horses on marshmallow sticks all over the skirt. Pastel blue, pink and white... The blue/pink version of the dress is kinda okay... (it's not, but you know what I mean. In czech we'd say it's a "ulitba bohum", which literally means "a sop for the gods", referring to ancient times when people gave little gifts such as food/act to the god's temple, hoping to calm the god's anger or to gain his favor), and the lilac one is quite cute, but I find the black one simply tasteless - the contrast is just too huge, in my opinion.

The second print I find truly disgusting is the Juliette et Justine's Le eclat de croix. As opposed to the previous rant about the AP, I highly fancy the JJ brand - they make really wonderful and very elegant dresses, and that's probably the reason why I was so shocked to see the Le eclat de croix print, and it's popularity among lolitas from EGL comm (It's not as popular as the Sugary Carnival, but t
hat's pretty reasonable - hell, the dress is 325 USD and the dress style is just so damn SIMPLE and I dare to say
damn tacky as well. The only thing which is a little bit more expensive is the material (high quality velvet), so aside of that I guess you pay only for the print).

Really, I would LOVE to have a dress like that (in a different style) - The beautiful and elegant deep black or purple velvet, shiny but still decent golden print. But pardon me - JESUS? I mean, what's so "lolita" about crucified Jesus?
I have nothing against christians (altough I think I'd be pretty offended by the print if I were a christian) and their symbolism. I respect them, of course. And I find crosses combined with Goth Loli beautiful and classy.

But a dead man on a dress? Hello? If I had a naked hung man print skirt made, would I get "ooooh so elegant and cute" comments on Daily Lolita? Would I be admired among fellow lolitas for showing a print with a woman being tortured and burnt in fire for witchcraft? Guess no. I'd probably be called sick, disgusting and mentally ill, and I'd appear on GTFO egl instantly.

Plus, the style of the dress is simply cheap. I mean, it's a really easy dress to sew, there's nothing extraordinary. My mom has a dress like this from the time when she was pregnant.

So what the hell is going on with this piece of clothing?
