It had been raining for nearly two days on the island. Although not constant, it was an irritating rain that fell in unpredictable cycles. Peaceful drips would pepper the ground before crashing daggers whooshed down stinging the skin on contact.
Her mind returned repeatedly to the few moments of terror that brought her here.
The plane crash.
No matter how hard she tried she could focus on nothing else, not even the pain. Left for dead, but too much alive, Claire became dizzy as the smoke from a big fire raped her nostrils. A part of her wondered how long the others could keep it on with all the rain. It was a silly thought compared to her situation and the slightest movement of her head made her whole body cringe in pain.
Did anyone search for her and Charlie while they’re gone? Did anyone even care? What had happened to Charlie and most important, what had happened to her? There were too many question inside her head. Too many irritating facts and false memories. At the same time Claire could not remember anything that happened after she had been kidnapped. Anything but the rain. And now she was back, on the beach with several wounds.
Yet, no one seemed to recognize her. All Claire could see was a big fire, the one they’d kept for several days now, but no people. A part of her was glad to be alone. No questions, no worries, no explanations.
No one could understand the immensity of her pain, and maybe, quite possibly, no one ever would. Not even her. She had tried before and would continue, and maybe she had an idea of how Claire felt, but that was not enough. Nothing would ever be enough again.
She remained in the same position for what felt like several hours. Flat on her back and neck twisted to the right so that her ear rested on the dirty ground, her right knee raised a couple of inches as her foot leaned against a box someone had left on the beach. From a wound on her head poured an excess of blood which ran across her cheek and under her ear, soaking a portion of her hair. She wished for a cool breeze to brush against her battered cheeks, but the breeze never came. Her arms lay limp and loose at her sides as if she weren’t connected to them. Her hands felt tight, her fingernails pained and brittle and her knuckles were badly abraded. Dried blood clung around the bone. Claire wanted to touch her belly, wanted to feel him. But she couldn’t bring herself to lift one of her arms.
She was too scared to find out he was gone. That someone had taken her baby.
Suddenly a face appeared in front of her, and Claire couldn’t help but force a small, sad smile.
Claire breathed heavily and stared at the irony of beauty, her pale complexion compromised by smudges of mud and rain and by the translucent moonlight that glittered upon her moist skin. It was twinkling as if a thousand stars had landed there, almost as if an angel had fallen from the sky.
Kate.
“Claire? Can you hear me? Claire?” Kate asked. “Can you tell me what happened?”
It seemed as if she couldn’t stop touching the other woman’s face, tracing her cheeks and lips with her slender, cold fingers. After a few seconds Kate let go of her reddened cheeks and covered her mouth with her hand as she released a deep sigh of disbelief.
The look on her face segued to one of sheer panic as she took in Claire’s body.
“We have to get you to the caves. Jack will take care of you. Everything will be okay. Claire?” She waited for a response but all Claire could do was moan in pain.
“Where does it hurt?” Kate insisted.
“My stomach,” she whispered to her, “it hurts. The baby! Is it still…is it gone?”
The reply had cost all her strength as well as her courage. She didn’t know what those people had wanted from her or her child. It was hard to focus on anything at all and the throbbing pain inside her head made her sleepy.
“You may be hurt very badly,” Kate said gently as she put her hand on her belly and pressed in lightly, “Your baby’s still with you.” She gave a small smile, which quickly faded when she looked back at Claire’s face. She dropped her eyes almost immediately, seemingly unwilling to meet her gaze.
“Charlie! He was with me.”
“Don’t worry, we found him. He’s fine, just very worried about you. We all were. We…I missed you.” When she looked up, Claire could see her eyes glistening with tears. “I have to tell Jack.” With that Kate stood up and looked around, trying to find anyone to stay with her.
“Don’t ever leave me, Kate.”
Claire’s jaw hung open, evidently languished by her attempt to swallow bits of oxygen. She felt her lungs tremble as the air was released. God, she must have looked helpless. All she wanted in this moment was to be next to the only person she trusted enough to let herself feel something again.
Was it love?
She heard Kate yelling at someone to get Jack, while silent tears fell down her face. A moment later she was besides her on the ground. She placed her forehead against Claire’s shoulder and wrapped her arms softly around her trembling body.
“I’m here.”
Claire released a loud cry, one she had been holding back for some time. She tried to swallow it, but the feeling was too strong now. She heard the echo of her sweet, merciful voice rolling back from the distance. The sorrowful shrill sent chills palpitating through her body.

For some time now Claire laid on the ground, her eyes fixed on the beautiful woman besides her. A mixture of emotions combined to form an uncertain, nondescript one. She didn’t know what it was she was feeling; only that it was somehow different from what she had become accustomed to. Various images and memories flowed her mind, most of them referred to her life before the pregnancy.
Images of her mother, of Thomas and of the psychic.
She fell asleep at once and yet it was a nasty slumber filled with a petulant obsolescence that offered few images. She felt her own isolation but knew she was not alone. Kate’s hot breath reached her face and her small but strong hands clung to her.
What had happened to her?
She was lost now, in a new and strange world she would somehow have to learn to accept. But she would accept it because she had been saved. Without Kate she was sure she would be dead, one way or another, and she knew her previous life was somehow responsible for her dilemma. She had never believed in destiny before, but the last few weeks had changed her. With that realization, Claire would never look back, never to search for a part of her that, as far as she was concerned, didn’t even exist anymore.
She was lost now, but she had found what she was looking for.
Love.
