Alternatively, I've always found the "everything happens for a reason" cliche to be disconcerting, because then I've got to come to terms with there being reasons for horrible things like the one you mentioned.

no way. things dont happen for a reason.
things just happen and then our minds have to asign them some sort of order otherwise were just lost. so to say... "if my car had never broken down that day i never would have noticed how nice it is to walk a mile on a beautiful spring day," or something similar, is a crock of shit straight out of a horse's ass. the only reason why things happen is because things in motion will remain in motion until and opposite force is applied to them. so the very nature of time demands that something happen next... and then again after that another next and so on and so forth.

Point of order: to say "if my car had never broken down that day i never would have noticed how nice it is to walk a mile on a beautiful spring day" doesn't fit into the "everything happens for a reason" idea. It could just be a simple statement of fact: the car breaking down caused the appreciation. It's not like saying "my car broke down because Allah wanted me to know the joy of walking a mile on a beautiful spring day".

but its not even a look on the bright side thing like my example may have made it seem unintentionally. everything just happens. also there are all sorts of different levels of cliche that "everything happens for a reason" can entail. but i am assuming that the reason "everything happens for the reason that something has to happen next" is not what is meant by the phrase
