Have you considered that said guy actually realized that when she said "studying" he recognized hidden girl messages indicating something else? (such as intonations of "i'm bored", etc.)

People aren't so swell on being honest when you ask them how they are doing or what they are up to, you know.

If he recognized a hidden girl message, I'm impressed. It was encrypted with irritated glare and dismissive tone technology!

She had been staring at a Japanese book, and we did have a test today, so I would assume she was being honest.
