Yay! Yuletide! I still haven't had a lot of time to gorge myself on NEW FIC OMG, but here's what I've loved so far:
Archie Comics
Friends Don't Let Friends Suffer AloneThe problem with friends is that they plot against you.
This was written for me, and I adore it. I asked for Betty/Veronica with a large dose of the gang, and this includes everyone--all beautifully characterized and totally adorable. Veronica climbs a tree!
Arts & Sciences RPF - Soren Kierkegaard
The Knight of Infinite Resignation"His love for that princess would become for him the expression of an eternal love, would assume a religious character, would be transfigured into a love of the eternal being, which true enough denied the fulfillment but nevertheless did reconcile him once more in the eternal consciousness of its validity in an eternal form that no actuality can take away from him."
I love this. Kierkegaard was a complicated fellow, and this reads how I would have imagined (except way better).
Austin and Murray Families (Madeleine L'Engle)
How to Get to Carnegie Hall"I guess we'll have to practice."
Absolutely charming story about Emily Gregory and Josiah Davidson.
Calvin and Hobbes
This Kid I Once KnewDaniel sends their whole improv group an e-mail saying "check this out its fun1!1" and a link to a web comic called The Adventures of Spaceman Spiff.
Oh, sigh--absolutely note-perfect future Susie!
Easy A
Better Than NormalSummary: So how did Brandon meet that 'big black guy' he ran off with?
After seeing the movie, I was terribly curious to know what happened to Brandon, and this is the perfect explanation.
Fire and Hemlock (Diana Wynne Jones)
a winter night's dream'There are no happy endings,' Polly writes carefully, 'because nothing ever ends.' I am beginning to understand that now. There is truth in every story.
A lovely, atmospheric coda to the book about Polly and Tom's future.
Lord of the Flies (William Golding)
Casualty ReportThe war had many casualties.
It totally blew my mind a couple of years ago to find that there was fanfic for this book. Like, intellectually I understand that there is fanfic for everything, but sometimes coming across it accidentally is still a shock (like when I tripped over some Invader Zim slash fic. My face is still a bit O____o over that one). Anyway, I was delighted to see Lord of the Flies on the fandom list, and I loved this story--it's about the aftermath of the book, and I feel that I was able to understand it perfectly despite not having read the book in a decade. That said, now I want to reread the book so I can reread the story!
The Middleman
http://archiveofourown.org/works/142091Summary: Wendy Watson was having a day.
Adorable and so in-character!
The Mysterious Production of Eggs (Album) (Andrew Bird)
The Red CardA palindrome is the same thing backwards and forwards. A fake palindrome just looks that way.
When I requested fic for this song I was hoping that someone could create something amazing--and SweeneyAgonistes absolutely did. This is dark and fascinating and so much of it is pulled directly from the song--but all in unexpected and brilliant ways.
Oglaf
What To Do On a Day OffTwo guards and a mid-tier bureaucrat find their day off interrupted by an unusual problem. All in a day's work for the employees of the Mistress.
All the Oglaf fics are terrific, but this one is my favorite!
The Sandman
Every New BeginningHob Gadling hears secrets man was never meant to know, and learns more about endings and beginnings.
I haven't read the series in years, but this is exactly the right tone and feels like it picks right up after #75. I love Hob, and I love that this author filled him in for me--this is definitely part of my personal canon!
Six Characters In Search of an Author (Luigi Pirandello)
Six Characters In Search of a Fandom"Which came first, the Guttenberg Project or YouTube?"
An absolutely brilliant reimagining of the Six Characters on a new search for a new age. I hated this play but LOVED this reworking of it--definitely one of my favorite Yuletide pieces ever.
The Trouble With Angels
ChrysalisSome people need to sit quietly in chapel to hear God's plans for them. For Mary Clancy, washing dishes works just fine.
I love this movie, and this fic is gorgeous and perfectly in character.
Twin Peaks
If It Had to Perish TwiceThis is atmospheric and weird and interesting, and it stars Albert Rosenfield solving crimes with Dale Cooper! My favorite!
